Skiing and Snow Tubing at Wisp Resort:
Wisp is a 5 min car ride from Chalet Alpenglow and provides days of fun skiing, snowboarding, or snow tubing with or without lessons.Wisp Resort has 34 slopes and 12 chair and surface lifts and 10 operating lanes for snowtubing. The slopes usually open in December, weather depending. Wisp has powerful equipment to make a lot of its own snow when Mother Nature is taking a break. Book your tickets earlier than later. Wisp also has a kids program in the winter for skiing and snowboarding, a full-day programm from 8:30 - 3:00pm for kids age 5-12. Depending on the season, on Saturdays they offer Kids Night Out.

Deep Creek Lake is one of the most popular destination in Maryland for ice fishing. The primary targets at Deep Creek are bluegills, walleye and yellow perch, although largemouth bass, crappie and trophy northern pike are sometimes pulled through the ice. Maryland Snowshoeing Tour organized by All Earth Tours is a memorable escape into the backcountry of Swallow Falls State Park or the north slope of Snaggy Mountain. It’s easy to do and their mountaineering style snowshoes are fun to use uphill and downhill. As an alternative, you can rent snow shoes and explore at Harrington Manor State Park. Discovery Center also rents snow shoes.
Cross Country Skiing:
Herrington Manor State Park - 10 miles of easy to intermediate trails to enjoy & cross country ski rental.
New Germany State Park - 12 miles of trails for all ability levels. For novice skiers try the flat green trail, which is paralel to Popular Lick or Three Bridge trail. Advanced skiers can enjoy any of the trails that branch of the Green trail and climb the steep valley.
Deep Creek Lake State Park - ungroomed but open for cross country skiing.
Wisp Resort - cross country is available at the Nordic Center in the Appalachian Yurt in Wisp's Sundown village which also provides rentals and lessons. The trails are located on Fantasy Valley Golf Course terrain. You can get trail passes, equipment and lessons at the Nordic Center.
Canaan Valley Resort in West Virginia - nearby Davis, WV, offers many trails which are marked but ungroomed. Rentals for adults and kids, lessons are available
Best Sledding Hills:
Frontyard of Chalet Alpenglow - right in front of our house
Herrington Manor Park - when you enter the park, pay the entry fee and go off to the left. There’s a small parking area near the park office and the hill is between the office and the cabins. They have sled rentals.
Blackwater Falls in Davis, WV - sledding park with the longest hill on the East Coast, located just 45 minutes south of Deep Creek Lake, with sledding hill, sled rentals, and a conveyor belt to take you to the top of the hill.

Deep Creek Lake Lions Club Park - at 1249 Bumble Bee Rd has a nice hill area for sledding and there's a shallow pond there that freezes up nicely for skating
