Looking for a tranquil destination to escape with your beloved four-legged companion? Imagine waking up in a beautiful Chalet surrounded by nature, with your furry friend by your side, excited for the adventures to come. Look no further than Chalet Alpenglow nestled in the heart of Deep Creek Lake, Maryland.

We've compiled a list of the best dog-friendly activities and locations, ensuring you and your pet have an unforgettable vacation in Deep Creek.

Dog Parks:

In Garrett County, you can find two dog parks. One is the Deep Creek Lake Lion’s Club off-leash dog run, located at 1249 Bumble Bee Road. A mere stone's throw away from Chalet Alpenglow, this 40,000 square foot dog park is a doggie dream come true. It features a double-entry system, waste disposal, and separate fenced areas for large and small dogs. A joint effort by the Deep Creek Lions Club, HART for Animals, and a local middle school, it's a great spot to mingle with local pet owners and visitors alike.

Oakland's dog park, found at 27 Oakland Rosedale Road, is another option. It's a secure, fenced-in area where dogs can roam freely, with agility equipment for added enjoyment.

Dog-friendly State Parks:

Garrett County is home to eight state parks, all welcoming pets with a few exceptions. Spend the day trekking through the stunning local landscapes, with your faithful companion by your side. Please refer to the respective park website for more detailed information.

  • Swallow Falls State Park: Just a short drive from Chalet Alpenglow, this park offers a dog-friendly hiking trail outside the day-use area during summer. Between Labor Day and Memorial Day, pets can access all trails. In summer, don’t drive into the main gate area but park in the gravel lot next to the one-lane bridge right outside the park. Cross the road and follow the river for about 1/2 mile to reach Muddy Creek Falls on the left. Here, you can break away from the main trail, climb, swim, and generally enjoy a fun-filled day with your pup.

  • Deep Creek Lake State Park: The sandy beach area is off-limits to dogs, but the rest of the park offers lots of terrain and trails to explore with your dog.

  • Herrington Manor State Park: Even though pets aren't permitted in the day-use area during peak season, the park still offers plenty of terrain and trails to explore with your pet.

  • Garrett State Forest: Located between Swallow Falls and Herrington Manor, this 7,000+ acre forest boasts a trail that connects both parks. An old railroad track, the trail is wide and relatively flat, offering a leisurely hike through nature. The forest is also home to the Rock Maze, a natural spectacle. Pets are allowed in all areas of the Forest.

Dog-friendly Restaurants:

After a day full of adventures, unwind with your pet at various pet-friendly restaurants. Savor a meal while your pet relaxes by your side. Most establishments that offer outdoor seating will welcome your pet, provided they are leashed. These include:

  • Mountain State Brewing Company: Relax by the fire pit on the patio and relish the renowned Mountain Maryland sunsets with your dog, while enjoying their flatbreads and microbrews.

  • Honi-Honi Bar: Known for its breathtaking lake view, dogs are welcome on the lawn at this local favorite. Enjoy live entertainment on the weekends.

  • Traders Coffee

  • Dutch’s Restaurant

  • Lakeside Creamery

Lake Activities:

  • Kayaking on Deep Creek Lake: Nothing says vacation like a peaceful morning paddle on the lake, with your dog as your companion. Local providers will even deliver a double kayak straight to Chalet Alpenglow.

  • Lake Life Boat Rentals: Not far from Chalet Alpenglow, these rentals offer pontoons and ski boats that are dog-friendly.

Veterinary Care:

  • HART for Animals Facility: Should you require any veterinary care, grooming, or boarding services for your pet during your stay, this facility is conveniently located close to Chalet Alpenglow. https://www.hartforanimals.org/bredel-veterinary-clinic

  • Pineview Veterinarian Hospital, open Mondays to Saturdays during business hours, https://pineviewveterinaryhospital.com/

  • Cheat Lake Animal hospital, open and staffed 24/7, with emergency and urgent care hours available 24 hours every day of the year. https://www.cheatlakevets.com/

Remember, while exploring these beautiful places with your pet, ensure to abide by the park rules, which often require dogs to be on leashes. Clean up after your pet and keep them under control to respect other visitors.
